This review is from:Best of the Hoodoo Rhythm Devils (Audio CD)who are not familiar with the Hoodoo Rhythm Devils have missed out. They were a great West Coast band, led by the late (and very talented) Joe Crane. He and core band mates Glenn Walters, Richard Green and John Rewind turned out
some  great soulful rock, with toe-tapping rhythms and tasty musicianship. Sort of  like Creedence Clearwater meets the Subdudes, but with a slightly rawer edge.
This small-label compilation offers most of the band's best tunes, culled  from their four albums. While there is not one even mediocre (much less
'bad')  tune on the disc, standouts include the rousing 'Too Hot to Handle' (which got  some national airplay in 1972), 'Safe in Their Homes', 'All Tore
Down' and the  best version of Dylan's 'Tangled Up in Blue' you've ever heard. If you remember  the Hoodoos, then you'll love this 17 song collection. If
you've never heard  them, but like the musical real McCoy, then get this while you can.

Knew all of the songs before, and when they came out. Joe Crane had more rhythm and soul in his little finger than anyone I have ever heard (then and now).  Glen Walters, Ultimate Blues singer and front man could strut his stuff with anyone.  If you ever get the chance listen to Glen do  "Lead Me On" with his dad on Sax.  Crane and Walters (if they had a few breaks)would now be rock legends to all rather than just a few.  Glen, THANKS FOR THE MEMORIES                             Read more...

Loved them Devils
Ya, I was one of the fortunate ones. Loved
the band  and went to see them whenever they played. Long branch, Keystone,
Golden Gate  Park, Realto Rodeo. Great funky music with a hell of a fun upbeat
sound. We used  to dance at all their shows. You would have to be careful if you
got too close  to the stage since the Sax player had a liquid fuel line
connected to his Sax...

Joe  Crane,
founder of the San Francisco based Hoodoo Rhythm Devils, was a brilliant
songwriter. Like Lowell George, he wrote great songs in a wide variety of
styles. He also played a fine piano and guitar and had a wonderfully,
expressive  and funky voice. His partner, Glenn Walters, was simply the best
"blue-eyed  soul" singer of his generation.
You must buy this cd. It was pressed on a small, independent label and it
probably won't be available for very long. You will be purchasing a timeless,
musical treasure of rock, blues, soul and funk from a few guys who were,..."too
damn funky to be in a big-time band." Walters' vocal performance on the
definitive version of Dylan's "Tangled Up In Blue," is alone worth the price of
  admission.

Joe Crane, Glenn Walters and their bandmates kicked butt in bars all over the
Bay Area. They have the soulful Oakland sound along with Glenn's deep groove
reminciscent of Bill Medley. They are one mofo of a funky band. Best bar band I
ever saw. We followed them all over the East Bay and never left without being
hoarse and exhausted from singing/yelling and dancing. These are the best of
their recorded material. Joe Crane died way too early fo Leukemia. Their last
Album, Safe in Their Homes was wonderful and I hope it gets released in its
entirety soon. "Crazy 'bout the Ladies" and "Too Hot to Handle" are classic
dance your ass off music while Dylan's "Tangled Up in Blue" has never been done
so well. I know most people outside the SF Bay Area don't know these guys, but
give 'em a shot, and get ready to do some funky boogying.
